Don’t Let Dental Anxiety Stop You From Getting the Care You Need: Oral Sedation Can Help

Stress and anxiety are a normal part of visiting the dentist for many. However, people with severe anxiety may find it difficult (if not impossible) to keep dental appointments, even for routine treatment.

However, putting off dental care and treatment can have serious consequences for your oral health. Fortunately, there are options to help you get the care you need if you experience dental fear and anxiety.

Our prosthodontist, Dr. Ramin Mahallati, and our team at the Center for Implant & Esthetic Dentistry offer sedation dentistry services at our office in Beverly Hills, California.

Sedation dentistry for dental anxiety

Several types of sedation dentistry are available, ranging from mild to full sedation. The four main types of sedation dentistry available include:

Nitrous gas

Nitrous oxide, commonly known as “laughing gas,” is a mild form of sedation that helps you to feel comfortable and relaxed during your treatment while remaining fully conscious and awake.

Oral sedation

This is a moderate form of sedation taken in pill form. You’ll still be awake during your procedure but experience a deeper form of sedation where you may feel groggy and not remember the entire procedure.

IV (intravenous) sedation

This type of sedation is known as deep sedation, where you experience “twilight sleep.” You’re not fully unconscious. Instead, you are on the cusp of unconsciousness.

IV sedation is administered by a qualified and skilled anesthesiology professional to ensure your comfort and safety.

General anesthesia

General anesthesia is administered when unconsciousness is required to perform the procedure.

Sedation dentistry is administered on a case-by-case basis. If you have any issues or concerns about your dental treatment, contact us to discuss your options before your appointment.

Dr. Mahallati and our team will comprehensively evaluate your medical history and needs and recommend the best sedation dentistry options.

Recognizing and managing your dental anxiety symptoms

People experience dental fear and anxiety in different ways. It can range from mild apprehension to severe dread and panic. Dental anxiety can include a fear of needles and drills or the stress surrounding sounds and smells in a dental office.

There’s no shame in experiencing dental anxiety, and you can get help to navigate your anxiety so you can get the care you need.

There are ways to feel relaxed, from practicing relaxation techniques before each appointment to downloading your favorite playlist, podcast, or series to watch during your treatment. Our team is here to help you get the dental care you need.
