What Are Inlays and Onlays and How Do They Work?

Depending on size, cavities can usually be treated with a standard filling. However, when tooth decay is too extensive to be treated with a standard filling, a crown is usually the best option to save and restore a damaged tooth.
At the Center for Implant & Esthetic Dentistry, our prosthodontist, Dr. Ramin Mahallati, and our team offer restorative and cosmetic dentistry services at our Beverly Hills, California office.
What are inlays and onlays?
Inlays and onlays are used to fix teeth damaged by decay or to repair a damaged filling or fractured tooth. They’re typically made from porcelain.
They perform similar functions but cover different portions of the tooth. Onlays cover the cusp of a tooth, and inlays are used to fill the space in between.
Inlays usually don’t require the removal of as much tooth surface as a crown, but it varies depending on the type and extent of damage.
The procedure for placing inlays and onlays is similar to other dental restorations.
At the first appointment, your tooth will be treated to remove the cavity and clean the tooth. We will make an impression to create a custom onlay and place a temporary one in its place.
Most people are comfortable with a local anesthetic and find the procedure similar to a standard dental filling or cosmetic bonding.
Once the permanent restoration is ready, it’ll be bonded to your tooth and adjusted for a perfect fit.
Caring for your dental restorations
We will provide detailed instructions on caring for your temporary onlays and suggest a care plan to protect your teeth and gums from the effects of tooth decay and gum disease in the future.
While you wait for your permanent onlay, you may have to restrict eating certain foods and adjust your oral hygiene routine to prevent it from dislodging. Once the permanent onlay is in place, it’ll feel and function like a traditional filling.
How do you know which type of restoration is right for you?
A dental exam is the only way to know if you need a dental restoration. While you may have symptoms like pain or sensitivity when you have a cavity or tooth damage, you might not experience any symptoms at all until the damage has progressed.
Only our team can tell you which restoration is best for your needs.
To protect your oral health, schedule regular dental exams and cleanings every six months, and contact us if you notice any symptoms or issues that persist for more than a few days.
